A US-based company has developed a device designed to ease the opening of the pull tab on any type of can.

The TabUp machine slightly bends up the tab on beverage cans, making it easier to open without affecting internal pressure, according to its manufacturer.

Launched earlier this week, TabUp’s co-founders, Ryan Higgins and Matt Arthur, collaborated with Colorado-based end-of-line equipment supplier Codi Manufacturing to create the machine.

Codi’s operating chief Jared Jones told The Canmaker the process is typically for post-seaming, pre-packer, and pre-carrier applications, and is applicable to any type of can or end.

He explained that the ‘flaring’ process is carried out after any heat processing of the can and before the case packing.

In its current configuration, the machine processes up to 80 cans per minute and fits into a space measuring 24 inches x 12 inches (608mm x 304mm). 

However, Arthur said it is highly adaptable and they envisage it being suitable for very small to larger companies.

Located in Golden, Colorado, TabUp started working with Codi around a year ago, but the design has been under development for some time.

Arthur said: “Our grandfather started working on it before he passed away. We’d been working on it alongside our jobs and then decided to put all our effort in, reviving the idea from his previous drawings and ideas. 

“Then we connected with Codi and we’re finally picking up some speed.”

TabUp’s co-founder added the feedback so far has been very good, but they’re now trying to gather more opinions, including those of larger companies. 

According to Jones, they are actively looking to licence the technology to beverage companies that see a benefit from an easier opening lid, and they are happy to provide sample cans to companies that reach out to them.

Codi Manufacturing, which has previously built full conveying lines for Chinese canmakers ORG and CPMC, recently launched a 1,800cpm depalletiser and a 240cpm case packer.
